Man and Beast – Francis Bacon
Feb 15
The line between human and animal continues to blur, with our primal instincts just below the surface. I learned that Bacon was an openly gay man at a time when homosexuality was illegal, so he was banished from his home by his father at the age of 16.

He was fascinated by animals, especially dogs, orangutans, owls and pit bulls. In his paintings there are often bizarre images of animals, often filled with blood and distortion.

He created a large number of grotesque lines of spatial structure in his images. This is probably because he was a spatial designer and these structural lines make the animals and figures in his pictures appear to be imprisoned.

Finally, a set of my favourite paintings!
